Being a mom is by far the most important thing I have and ever will do, I am (along with every parent out there) molding tomorrow's leaders no matter whether they lead the world or thier own family in one way or another they will affect the world one person at a time. I do believe society has depicted an image of us that is expected to be followed but you must realize that society has never been able to agree with itself. So I would have to say the same as you, being a good mom isn't defined by what the world thinks but by what you do with yourself, how you raise your children, and of course the most important test of all is how your children turn out (with your teaching, loving, supporting, and yes discipline) in the end.
