A mother's lament - The Deadbolt Discovery :(
There are certain milestones that come into every mother and child's life - happy and sad. There are cute things like first words, walking, learning letters etc. But then there are the disconcerting milestones that affect your perception of peace and happiness in your life.
I'm talking about the things like learning to climb out of their crib, conquering child proof handles, crawling in places you never thought you had to worry about etc. My latest came when my 4 year old figured out that he could stack some things by the door in order to undo the deadbolt and leave the house. The deadbolt has kept relative order in our home. It's quelled possible mutinys and prevented my children from totally escaping my clutches.
Those days are over. In no time I"ll be installing laser security systems in the yard to keep them from escaping on the sly!
That's a cute age. My third child, Jesse, loved to leave our house. We would find her in cute places like all alone in our neighbor's basement watching a video. She told one nice lady who found her that her name was Sarah and that she lived with her Grandmother by the sea. One morning, after someone who lives three blocks away brought her BACK home at 5:45 a.m. we ended up putting secure locks on the top three inches of our doors and installing an alarm system that beeps every time the door is opened. It's a good thing we didn't have the dog's electric fence back then.
